About 85,000 Bangladeshis joined an ever biggest peace march in the capital Dhaka Thursday shouting slogans "peace, not war!" and urging US President George W Bush to stop war game against Iraq.

The marchers included judges, lawyers, university teachers, journalists, cultural personalities, poets and writers.

The march under the banner "The National Committee Against Aggression" created huge traffic jams in the city which is witnessing protests against possible US-led attack on Iraq almost everyday.

Addressing a rally before the march, speakers urged President Bush to stop his arms campaign against Iraq. They also urged the Muslims across the world to be united to resist the war.

Bangladesh, the third largest Muslim-majority country, has called for a peaceful resolution to the Iraq dispute under the aegis of the United Nation.

Foreign Secretary Shamsher M Chowdhury reiterated that "Bangladesh supports peaceful solution of Iraq issue under the UN umbrella."

He told newsmen at a regular weekly briefing that the role of the United Nations as the prime player in this situation should be identical in nature.

Bangladesh, the Foreign Secretary said, has a contingency plan to evacuate its nationals living in the Middle East if it is so required.
