At least 80 people are missing two days after a boat capsized as it was crossing the Niger River in Nigeria's northwestern state of Kebbi, state radio reported Monday.

So far, only five people aboard the boat have been rescued while nine bodied have been recovered, said Abdullahi Zuru, spokesman for Kebbi state.

According to the spokesman, the ill-fated boat was carrying about 100 people when it struck a reef on Saturday.

The boat capsized immediately, the spokesman said, adding that local authorities dispatched a rescue team immediately.

Zuru said rescue operations were continuing on Monday but the remaining 80-strong people on the boat were feared dead with little hope of survival.
