The East China Trade Fair, the first major import-export trade fair of the year, opened Saturday in Shanghai, China's leading economic center.

The fair, one of the largest regional fairs in China, attracted 2,400 enterprises from nine eastern Chinese provinces and from Shanghai, and featured exhibitors from 13 countries and regions.

An official from the organizing committee said that the fair registered record attendance.

Apparel, light industrial products and handicrafts dominated the exhibits on display in the 3,000 booths in the 57,500-square-meter exhibition hall.

The first East China Trade Fair, held in 1991, attracted 6,018 businessmen from 71 countries and regions and generated 1 billion US dollars in export transaction value. Since 2001, attendance has exceeded 10,000 each year. The export transaction value for the 2002 fair totaled 1.6 billion dollars.
