Arafat Expected to Nominate Prime Minister Next Week

Special envoy of the United Nations tothe Middle East Terje Roed-Larsen announced Friday that the Palestinian Central Council (PCC) of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) would convene next week to discuss the nomination of a Palestinian prime minister.

Special envoy of the United Nations tothe Middle East Terje Roed-Larsen announced Friday that the Palestinian Central Council (PCC) of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) would convene next week to discuss the nomination of a Palestinian prime minister.

Larsen said that he was told by Palestinian leader Yasser Arafatthat the PCC will meet next week to discuss the question of nominating the new Palestinian Prime Minister of the Palestinian National Authority.

Larsen, who met with Arafat Friday at the West Bank town of Ramallah on behalf of the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, told reporters that Arafat informed him Palestinian Legislative Council(PLC) would convene the week after on this matter."I met with President Arafat on behalf of Mr. Kofi Annan, theSecretary General, and discussed with him (Arafat) several issues of a common concern, especially the nomination of the PalestinianPrime Minister," the UN envoy said.

The official Palestinian news agency WAFA reported that Arafat and Larsen discussed the current deteriorated situation in the Palestinian territories and the efforts made to end violence and resume the peace negotiations.

"The efforts to end the current Israeli army aggression on the Palestinian people and the efforts to bring the peace process backto its track were discussed at the meeting," said WAFA.Both PCC and PLC are expected to meet to approve Arafat'sdecision of appointing a prime minister, which was made two weeks ago.

Israel has already announced that it is not intending to preventthe two bodies to convene.

Israel made the pledge under the pressure exerted by Europe onthe Jewish state. However, Israel said that all members of the PCC and PLC who were involved in violent activities against Israel would be prevented from attending the meetings that are expected to take place in Ramallah.
