Nigeria is committed to meeting the June 4 launching of the first Nigerian satellite, a spokesman for the National Space Research Development Agency (NARSDA) of Nigeriasaid on Tuesday.

"With the preparation on ground, unless there arises any meteorological problem, the date will not be altered," he said.

After the launching, Olaniyi said, the agency would start working toward the National Satellite II.

He said the first satellite would address the issues of remote sensing which involved the understanding and management of environment and natural resources, using space-acquired information.

"It is a technology which enables us to understand our land, air and water resources and problems associated with them," he added.

"It also deals with meteorological factors, the study of atmospheric and weather sciences, using satellite data to facilitate the effective management of our environment," Olaniyi said.

He said the second satellite, tagged "Communication Satellite,"would be concerned with information technology.

It addresses the efficient and reliable telecommunication services for Nigeria to enhance the growth of industrial, commercial and administrative sectors of the economy.

According to the spokesman, when this is acquired, it will serve the nation's needs and those of neighboring African countries that would pay for the services.
