Some 500 academicians of the Third World Academy of Sciences, governmental officials and representatives of international organizations, including Nobel Prize winners, will gather in Beijing from Oct. 16 to 19 to attend the 14th conference of the Third World Academy of Sciences.

The Third World Academy of Sciences, founded in 1983 at the initiative of the late Pakistani Nobel Prize Winner Abdus Salam, will celebrate its 20th anniversary this year.

In 1987, Beijing became the venue of the annual meeting of the Third World Academy of Sciences, said Lu Yongxiang, President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The Third World Academy of Sciences' principal objectives include supporting scientific research in developing countries, promoting scientific exchanges and cooperation and encouraging research initiatives on third world problems, he said.

The attendants will discuss the strategy of science and development in the developing countries to echo the theme of the 14th conference, "science and development". Meanwhile, some Nobel Prize winners will be invited to deliver speeches.

The Third World Academy of Sciences, a non-governmental and non-profit organization, is comprised of 626 academicians from 77 countries and regions, including 86 Chinese scientists.
