Olympic champion Yang Yang beat herself to win the short track speed skating women's pursuit in Harbin on Sunday at the 10th Chinese National Winter Games.

The 26-year-old Yang, who claimed the titles of the women's 500m and 1,000m at the Salt Lake City Olympic Games in 2002, clocked one minute 9.162 seconds to lead the hosts to a clean sweep of the medals in the 7-lap competition.

"I beat myself to win," said Yang Yang, who had not had regular training since the Olympics but spent most of her time in social activities and her study at the Tsing Hua University.

"I had not been in good shape recently. I did not think about my opponents before the race. I just did the best I could and outperformed myself," she added.

Yang's Harbin teammates Wang Meng and Fu Tianyu finished the second and third in 1:10.331 and 1:10.436 respectively.

The short track speed skating competitions of the Games are running from Sunday to Wednesday with a total of 14 gold medals on offer.
