It is the first time for a passenger liner to sail straightly from Jinmen Island of Taiwan to China's mainland. 145 passengers carried to the maniland by the liner came to Quanzhou to do shopping and visit their relatives and friends. They and some other Taiwanese businessmen working in Fujian Province would go back home by the liner on Jan. 13 for the upcoming Spring Festival holidays.

British aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal leaves southern Britain's Portsmouth Harbour Naval Base for the Mediterranean Jan. 11, 2003. The aircraft carrier is officially heading for an excercise in the Mediterranean before a possible deployment to the Gulf region.
