Chinese Speed Skater Loses Five Teeth But Clinches National Gold
There is an old saying: no pains, no gains. Chinese speed skater Wang Fei proved it with her experience.
In a training session last summer, Wang fell off a bicycle and her five teeth were broken. One year later, she crowned the women's 3,000m title at the 10th Winter National Games here on Monday.
"Her teammates and I all cried after we found that she had lost five teeth in the accident." said Wang Fei's coach Liang Linhua, a 36-year-old retired speed skater, after Wang clocked four minutes and 21.03 seconds to take the gold for Harbin. "Finally she went through it."
Liang broke into tears at the press conference after the competition while Wang took the victory calmly.
"I believed in myself before the race," Wang said. "I have the ability to win."
With her first-ever national gold in pocket, Wang vowed to march on to fulfill the Olympic dream of her coach and friend Liang Linhua.
"I have been dreaming of representing China to take part in international competitions and the Olympics. My coach was very sorry for missing the Olympics. I will try to make the dream into reality for her."
Harbin took three of the four golds on offer on the first day of the speed skating races. Zhao Xin and Gao Xuefeng triumphed in the women's 500m and men's 5,000m respectively while Gao Feng from Jiamusi, Heilongjiang province, took home the title of the men's 500m.
