Better China-Japan cooperation benefits the two peoples and contributes to the peace, stability and development of Asia and the world at large, Chinese top legislator Li Peng said in Beijing Wednesday.

Li, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, made the remarks in his meeting with a delegation from the Japan-China Youth Research Association led by Hata Tsutomu, member of the Japanese House of Representatives and former Japanese prime minister.

Li praised the efforts by non-governmental organizations in the two countries to encourage bilateral ties.

He noted that "taking history as a mirror and looking to the future" sums up the important experiences of both countries when building ties during the last three decades after they normalized diplomatic relations.

He hoped politicians and people from all walks of life will continue working to develop Sino-Japanese ties based on the China-Japan Joint Statement, the China-Japan Treaty of Peace and Friendship and the China, Japan to Build Friendly and Cooperative Partnership Joint Statement.

Li said the Chinese government attaches great importance to environmental protection and encourages international cooperation in the field, adding that China appreciates the cooperative results achieved by China and Japan in this regard.

Hata Tsutomu said the cooperation between the non-governmental organizations of the two countries has great potential and a bright future.

He said he and the Japan-China Youth Research Association are willing to strengthen cooperation with the All-China Youth Federation and continue working on the conservation project for protecting the Yellow River.

The Japan-China Youth Research Association visited China as guest of the All-China Youth Federation.
