China's Jiangsu Export Commodities Exhibition 2002 opened here on Thursday, displaying more than 1,000 types of Jiangsu-made products which attract hundreds of Nigerian government officials and local people from all walks of life.

Addressing the opening ceremony of the export trade fair in Lagos, Qi Changyu, head of the Jiangsu export commodities fair delegation, said he expected the fair will become a good opportunity for Jiangsu to promote Chinese-Nigerian trade and economic cooperationin wider fields and further advance bilateral friendship and cooperation through common efforts.

Qi, who is also deputy director-general of China's Jiangsu Provincial Department of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation, believes that the fair will "further expand Chinese-Nigerian economic relations and trade."

As one of China's most economically developed regions, the exhibition head said, Jiangsu's gross domestic product ranks second in China after Shanghai, the largest industrial city in China, with its 2001 GDP reaching 115 billion US dollars.

Since Nigeria's civilian-elected President Olusegun Obasanjo took office in May 1999, the Chinese-Nigerian bilateral foreign trade has grown rapidly from 578 million dollars in 1999 to 850 million dollars in 2000. In 2001, the figure went up to 1.144 billion dollars, making Nigeria China's third largest trade partner in Africa after South Africa and Egypt.

An official from the Economic and Commercial Office of the Chinese Embassy to Nigeria told reporters that the year 2002 has seen steady growth of foreign trade between China and Nigeria.

"Total foreign trade between the two countries in the first nine months of the year amounted to some 800 million dollars, of which export trade increased to 790 million dollars, an increase of over 14 percent from the corresponding period of 2001," he said.
