A huge Chinese-made crude-oil tanker is on its maiden voyage to South Korea after leaving its Dalian shipyard home Sunday morning.

The 300,000 dead weight ton Iran Delvar, a giant built by the Dalian New Shipping Heavy Industry Co Ltd (DNS), will go via Singapore.

The ship was bought by the National Iranian Tanker Co (NITC) and will be used by the company to fill orders throughout the world.

The very large crude-oil carrier (VLCC) - which took two years to build - is China's first step into the world tanker market.

Three years ago, the Dalian company won a US$370 million contract to build five ships, all of the same size, for NITC.
