Third-seeded Lin Dan of China suffered an upset in his opener against India's Pullela Gopichand in the 170,000 US dollars Singapore Open badminton tournament Wednesday in Singapore.

Lin, who defeated the Indian in the first round last year, packed up his package after losing to Gopichand 15-4 and 15-2 as the latter savored the most sweet revenge over the Chinese.

The unseeded Gopichand earlier had an indifferent performance since his historic All England triumph, and skipped an Asian satellite badminton tournament in Bombay last week to concentrate on the Open after a three-month rest due to a stress fracture.

"Everything just went to plan. The return of the 15-point format is a big bonus for me," said Gopichand.

The Indian had a 5-1 early lead and had never let the Chinese to claw back throughout the contest with his solid defense and pinpointed attacks.

While Gopichand will face Hong Kong's Ng Wei, a 15-8, 15-5 winner over England's Andrew Smith in the second round, his compatriot Nikhil Kanetkar pulled up another upset by beating sixth seed Kenneth Jonassen of Denmark.

However, top seed Xia Xuanze of China survived a tough match against Singaporean Henrda Wijaya 17-14 and 15-12.
