The hot-temper coach helped Dalian Wanda win the 1999 league, sent Shanghai Zhonggyuan to the first division league in 2001 and returned to Shanghai Shenhua in December 2001.

Shanghai Shenhua has recorded two wins, two draws and six losses this season, placing second to the last under the guidance of Xu.
