Lack of Organization Cause of China's Loss

Chinese defender Li Weifeng said Tuesday he did a good job defending Costa Rica's top scorer Paulo Wanchope, but lack of organization and cooperation costed China their first ever World Cup match.

"I had dozens of face-off with Wanchope in the game. I think I did well in guarding him," Li said.

"But football is a sport of 11 players. Our defense had problems in corporation. I suffocated Wanchope from scoring, but we failed to guard the others," he added.

Ronald Gomez blasted home a rebounder in the 61st minute after Paulo Wanchope's shot was blocked in the box by Chinese defender Xu Yunlong.

Four minutes later, defender Mauricio Wright put Costa Rica 2-0 ahead as he surged in at the near post to head in Gomez's cross from close range.

"Wachope was replaced with 15 minutes left in the game. They knew he could do little in front then," Li said.
