China Cares About Environmental Protection
A photographic exhibition opened in Nanning, capital of southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, on June 5, the World Environment Day. It aims to warn people about the dangers of pollution and to call on them to think more about environmental protection.

The 98 pictures on display included photographs of ecological destruction, water and air pollution and solid waste and radioactive pollution. They showed the damage already done to the environment in Guangxi.

Many visiting the photo show were horrified by what they saw and called for something to be done to return the earth to its former beauty.

The environmental exhibition will last for three months and will continue to be displayed around different areas in Guangxi.

It is just one example of how the Chinese government and the Chinese people are seriously concerned about environmental protection.

Government's efforts
The Chinese government attaches great importance to environmental protection and manages to achieve sustainable economic development.

According to the 2001 report issued by the State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA), while the nation's economy maintained a 7 per cent growth rate, the overall state of the environment in China remained roughly the same in 2001 as in 2000.

The Chinese government's efforts in this regard have paid off in some key projects. For example, total pollutant discharges have been further reduced, according to SEPA officials.

China launched a project to control soil erosion in areas along the upper reaches of the Yangtze in 1989. The results of the latest monitoring show that solid content in the water along the whole course of the Yangtze river, the longest in China, has dropped significantly in recent years, turning around the situation of gradual rising solid content in the past 50 years.

Thanks to the efforts of the Chinese government, water is flowing along the lower reaches of the Tarim River, the longest inland river of China, after more than 30 years of dry river beds.

China's third longest river, the Huaihe, is to resume flowing directly into the sea this year, ending its notorious 800-year history of frequent flooding, after a 164-kilometer waterway leading to the sea is completed towards the end of the year.

To safeguard ecological safety and promote sustainable economic development and social progress, China has formulated 36 environmental laws and regulations in recent years.

According to the environment protection goals for the 10th Five-Year Plan period (2001-05), the total discharges of major pollutants in China is expected to shrink by 10 per cent by the end of 2005, compared with the figure in 2000.

The total investment in environmental protection in the 2001-2005 period will top 700 billion yuan (84.3 billion U.S. dollars).

The acreage of natural reserves will account for 13 per cent of China's territory, and 35 per cent of urban areas will be green by that time.
