Seven Chinese Military Officers Promoted to General
Seven senior military officers of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) were awarded the rank of general Sunday by the Central Military Commission Sunday in Beijing.
China's Central Military Commission(CMC) Sunday conferred the rank of general on seven senior military officers in Zhongnanhai, the headquarters of the central government in Beijing.
President Jiang Zemin, who is also chairman of the commission, awarded the officers certificates of command at the ceremony. An order for the promotion was announced by Vice-President Hu Jintao, who is also vice-chairman of the CMC.
The seven newly-promoted generals are Qiao Qingchen, Wen Zongren, Qian Guoliang, Jiang Futang, Chen Bingde, Liang Guanglie and Liu Shutian, who come from the PLA Air Force, the PLA Academy of Military Sciences, military area commanders of Shenyang, Jinan, Nanjing and Guangzhou, respectively.
A total of 81 senior officers of the PLA have received the rank of general since 1988 when the system of military ranks was re-established.
China first adopted the system of military rank in 1955 after its foundation, and the system was cancelled in 1965 by the Ninth Session of the Third National People's Congress, one year earlier than the ''cultural revolution'' (1966-76).
Seventeen senior officers received the title of general in 1988 at the first general-award ceremony after the system was restored.
Six senior officers were promoted to general in 1993. Zhang Wannian, vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission, also received the title at that time.
Later, 19 other senior officers were promoted to general in 1994, four in 1996, 10 in 1998, two in 1999 and 16 in 2000.
