Colombia Grants Asylum to Venezuela's Coup Leader

The Colombian government has granted asylum to Pedro Carmona, leader of a coup last month during which he was briefly installed as president of Venezuela, the Foreign Ministry announced on Sunday.

The ministry said that it had decided to grant diplomatic asylum to Carmona, a 61-year-old business leader.

Carmona was put under house arrest in the Venezuelan capital ofCaracas following the short-lived coup, but slipped away from house arrest last Thursday and fled into the Colombian ambassador's residence in the Venezuelan capital.

Carmona was facing trials in Venezuela for rebellion and conspiracy for his role in the coup.
