Li Ruihuan, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), met Monday with Amien Rais, chairman of the People's Consultative Assembly (PCA) of Indonesia.

This is the first visit of a delegation from this term of the PCA, which, apart from Amien himself, consits of five vice- chairmen and the scretary-general of the PCA.

During the meeting, Li extended his appreciation for the long- term efforts of Amien in promoting Sino-Indonesian ties.

He said friendship and exchanges between China and Indonesia had a long history, both were developing and big countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

Despite twists and turns in the process of developing bilateral relations, Sino-Indonesia ties had moved forward as a whole, he noted.

He said especially in recent years, the leaders of the two countries had exchanged more frequent visits, and communication and cooperation in various fields had expanded and the two supported and coordinated with each other in many international affairs.

His view was highly appreciated by Amien, who said that Chinese Indonesians had played positive role in the social and economic construction of Indonesia, and many had become law experts, scientists and even government ministers.

"All members of my delegation are amazed at the sharp changes that had taken place in Guangdong Province and Shanghai where we visited," he said, adding that his visit was to learn from China's experience in economic construction.

At the request of the Indonesian guests, Li briefed them on China's domestic economic construction.

He said the remarkable progress in China over past two decades was due to China's consistant pursuit of economic construction and adhering to the drive of reform and opening up.

In this process, China had exerted every effort to maintain ethnic unity and social stability as well as to set aside debates and disputes, he said.

"This is a basic precondition of economic construction," he said, adding that this exactly followed late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping's remarks: "Nothing could be done without (social) stability."

However, Li pointed out that Guangdong and Shanghai were developed areas and there were many areas that lagged far behind in economic development.

"It will take decades of construction to keep up with the economic development level of moderate developed countries," Li stressed.

Li also answered questions raised by members of the PCA.

The Indonesian guests are here at the invitation of Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of China.
