China's Top Legislator Meets Macedonian President

Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), met Monday with Macedonian President Boris Trajkovski.

Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), met Monday with Macedonian President Boris Trajkovski.

Li said Trajkovski's visit had a great impact on strengthening Sino-Macedonian friendship and cooperation of mutual benefit.

He said that China was satisfied with the growing bilateral cooperative relations, adding that furthering such cooperation with Macedonia was in the fundamental interests of the two peoples and should be based on the five principles of mutual respect of sovereignty and territorial integrity, non-aggression, non- interference in each other's internal affairs, equality and mutual benefit, and peaceful co-existence.

China thanked Macedonia for its commitment to the one-China policy, Li said.

He noted that the NPC wanted to cooperate with the parliament of Macedonia to promote friendship and understanding between the two peoples.

The foreign affairs committee of the Macedonian parliament visited China soon after the two countries normalized diplomatic ties, he said, adding that a delegation of the NPC foreign affairs committee would visit Macedonia some time this year.

Trajkovski said that he held fruitful talks with Chinese President Jiang Zemin. during the talks, they reached a consensus on bilateral relations and international issues and agreed that the two countries had no differences or disputes.

He said that there was still great potential for the development of relations and the two countries should promote both political and economic cooperation, as well as contact between governments and parliaments.

The president reaffirmed that Macedonia adhered to the one- China principle, and would not build up any official relations with Taiwan. Macedonia held that the People's Republic of China was the sole legitimate government representing the whole Chinese people.

He also invited Li to visit Macedonia, and Li expressed his gratitude.
