Iran Calls for Expulsion of Israel From U.N.

Iran on Saturday called on the United Nations to expel Israel from the world body because of its violation of the U.N. resolutions, cruel acts and massive massacres of the Palestinians in the occupied territories, the official IRNA news agency reported.
Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi was quoted as saying that the expulsion of the Israeli regime from the United Nations should be put on the U.N. agenda.
A human catastrophe is taking place in Palestine, Asefi said, calling for all Muslim countries and international organizations to put pressure on the Israeli regime to bring its violent and cruel actions to an end.
The spokesman, meanwhile, denied "unsubstantiated rumors" that Iran has provided the Palestinians with arms.
Israel accused Iran of sending a ship in early January to transport arms for the Palestinian National Authority (PNA), which was seized sailing in the Red Sea by Israeli navy.
There is no military measure in Iran's policy, Asefi stressed, adding that Iran would try through the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), the United Nations and other international bodies to secure the restoration of the Palestinians' rights.
Asefi also lashed out at the United States "for backing Israel while claiming to be defender of the human rights and to lead the anti-terror campaign."
It would be better for the United States to stop providing arms to the Israeli regime, he added.
Since Israel declared Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat its enemy and sent troops and tanks into the West Bank city of Ramallah to smash into Arafat's headquarters, the situation has been getting worse in the occupied areas.
In defiance of world-wide condemnation of the aggressive action, the Israeli army has recently intensified its widespread military offensive against Palestinian towns, refugee camps and villages, leaving many people dead and wounded.
Iran, which does not recognize Israel, supports Palestinian resistance groups in their movement against Israeli occupation.
