Vietnamese, Japanese PMs Affirm Strengthening Cooperation

Vietnamese Prime Minister Phan Van Khai Saturday stressed that unceasingly consolidating and strengthening friendship and cooperation with Japan is Vietnam's consistent and long-term policy.

Vietnamese Prime Minister Phan Van Khai Saturday stressed that unceasingly consolidating and strengthening friendship and cooperation with Japan is Vietnam's consistent and long-term policy.

The Vietnamese prime minister and visiting Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi held talks Saturday to discuss the measures of further strengthening cooperation between the two countries in many fields.

Phan Van Khai expressed his appreciation and thanks for Japan'ssupports to Vietnam's Doi Moi (renovation) program in the fields of economy and finance, saying that Japan has continuously provided high level ofofficial development assistance (ODA) for Vietnam while Japan itself is faced with economic difficulties.

Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi also expressed his thanks for the grand reception the Vietnamese side has accorded him. He stressed that attaching importance to the relations with Vietnam is Japan's consistent policy. He reiterated that Japan will continuously support the renovation, industrialization and modernization cause of Vietnam, promising that Japan will continueto provide ODA for Vietnam in the fields of capital construction, personnel training, reducing poverty, and environmental protection.

Koizumi also affirmed that Japan supports Vietnam's accession to the World Trade Organization as early as possible.

The two prime ministers also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern.

Later Saturday, the general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Nong Duc Manh, met with Koizumi.

Koizumi arrived here Saturday noon for a two-day official visitto Vietnam as guest of his Vietnamese counterpart Phan Van Khai. He is on an Asia-Pacific tour, which includes Vietnam, East Timor,Australia and New Zealand.

Koizumi is scheduled to meet with Vietnamese President Tran DucLuong and conclude his visit to Vietnam on Sunday.
