Chen Hua broke an Asian record in the women's 1500 meters freestyle to bring the Chinese National Swimming Championships to an inspiring conclusion Saturday in Anshan.
Chen, title holder of the 800m freestyle at Moscow short course championships earlier this month, completed an impressive golden triple at the meet with an Asian record performance in the 1500m freestyle after her victories in the 400m and 800m.
The 20-year-old, who turned the longest women's event into her personal show, clocked in 16 minutes 14.51 seconds, 3.81 seconds faster than the previous Asian mark set by a Japanese swimmer.
He Qian who came home second in a time of 16:25.63, also surpassed the national record set by Chen at Fukuoka world championships last July.
Chen said:"I was exhausted before tonight, because I have swam from Moscow to here. I didn't expect to better even my personal best. It was an energy-consuming event."
Qi Hui, world champion and breaststroke specialist, claimed victory in the women's 200m individual medley in 2:14.00 while Luo Xuejuan, another world champion, defended her fame in the women's 50m breaststroke in 31.47 after she lost her 100m crown to Qi yesterday.
Home favorite Zhang Song held off a strong challenge from Chen Xiujun to win the women's 200m backstroke in 2:12.61 and Ouyang Kunpeng snatched a gold in the men's 100m backstroke in 55.97.
The four-day national championships have witnessed one Asian record and three national records.
