President Jiang Zemin and Vice-Premier Li Lanqing, along with an audience of more than 2,000 Beijingers, watched "Don Quixote" staged by the Cuban National Ballet Troupe (CNBT) Thursday evening in Beijing.
Before the performance, President Jiang met with the Cuban dancers headed by Alicia Alonso, a world-renowned artist and art supervisor of the CNBT.
Welcoming the troupe, Jiang noted that Alonso had visited China in 1961 and 1964 and late Chinese leaders had watched her dance.
Both China and Cuba, he said, were socialist countries and Sino-Cuban cultural exchanges had a long history.
The current tour by Alonso was sure to help improve mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples, he added.
This evening's performance was warmly applauded by the audience.
The CNBT, founded in 1948, is a world-renowned ballet troupe. It is expected to stage four performances in Beijing and Shanghai respectively.
