The Israeli army said troops killed four Palestinians trying to attack the Jewish settlement of Kfar Darom in the Gaza Strip before dawn on Thursday.

A Palestinian security spokesman had no word on that incident, but said a policeman had been killed and two wounded when their post was hit by machinegun fire from three Israeli tanks that had thrust into the nearby town of Deir al-Balah.

He named the dead man as Captain Ibrahim Abdin of the National Security Forces and said an armored bulldozer accompanying the tanks had demolished a chicken farm.

An army spokesman said soldiers guarding Kfar Darom had spotted four men trying to infiltrate the settlement and killed them in an exchange of fire. The army still had custody of their bodies. He had no comment on Deir al-Balah incursion.

The shooting at Kfar Darom appeared to have erupted shortly before the overnight incursion into Deir al-Balah.
