A pod of over 20 whales was recently sighted in a freshwater canal by morning exercisers in east China's Jiangsu Province.

The whales were seen playing in the water in the Tongyu Canal near Xiangshui County at about 5:00 a.m. on April 15, witnesses said.

Xu Xinrong, a whale expert with the Nanjing Teacher's College, said whales had been spotted many times since the 1980s in the Guanghe River, which is linked to the canal and flows into the Yellow Sea.

However, he said, this was the first time whales had entered the freshwater canal.

The Tongyu Canal was opened in recent years. It is connected with the Yangtze River in the south and joins the Guanghe River near Xiangshui County.

The lack of any valve gate on the Guanghe River, deep water in the two channels and the rich resource of fish at their confluencemay explain the whales' wandering, Xu said.
