Sino-Malaysian Economic Ties Growing

While a Malaysian group is going all out to promote its building materials in Beijing, host of the 2008 Olympic Games, engineers from the China Railway Engineering Corporation are working on a railway project in the southern part of the Southeast Asian nation.

While a Malaysian group is going all out to promote its building materials in Beijing, host of the 2008 Olympic Games, engineers from the China Railway Engineering Corporation are working on a railway project in the southern part of the Southeast Asian nation.

A group led by a Malaysian minister is also expected to visit China soon, to look for business opportunities in three big cities including Beijing.

Official statistics show that China's economic ties with Malaysia are increasing steadily, with the two-way trade soaring to 9.4 billion U.S. dollars in 2001 from 5.2 billion U.S. dollars in 1999.

Malaysia is currently China's second largest trade partner among all the ASEAN countries.

By the end of 2001, China had invested in more than 1,400 engineering projects of varying types in Malaysia with a combined contractual value of 2.6 billion U.S. dollars. Last year, whereas Malaysia invested in 188 projects in China, up 63 percent year-on- year, with contracts worth over 500 million U.S. dollars.
