FedEx Express, the world's largest express transportation company, has revised its existing service to include direct flights between Japan's Narita airport and Beijing and Shanghai airports.

The changes involve three routes: from Narita to Beijing, from Narita to Shanghai, and from Beijing to Narita. There will be 10 direct flights on the Narita-Beijing and Narita-Shanghai routes, with a daily flight to each city from Monday to Friday. FedEx will operate its MD-11 aircraft on each route.

"As a result of these improvements, FedEx is able to widen its service to Beijing and Shanghai, China's two major distribution points. The flights follow the expansion of China's distribution needs following its entry to the WTO," says David L. Cunningham, president of FedEx Asia Pacific.

China, which has enjoyed annual economic growth of over 7 percent for the past decade, represents an enormous market with inexpensive labor costs for companies from a wide range of industries in Japan and the Asia-Pacific region. In the fast- evolving markets for information technology-related and high value- added manufactured goods, speed to market is crucial to remaining competitive. Demand for the air cargo services that make such prompt delivery possible was therefore growing between Japan and China, Cunningham added. FedEx, whose business entered into the Chinese market in 1984, currently provides services in 202 Chinese cities and is ready to add more in the next few years. FedEx further strengthened its operation in China by opening its FedEx-DTW Express Center at Shanghai's Pudong International Airport, the largest distribution center in the country.
