Chinese President Jiang Zemin's just-finished tour of Europe, Africa and Asia was wholly successful and fruitful, Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan said in Beijing on Tuesday.

President Jiang on Monday concluded his two-week state visit to Germany, Libya, Nigeria, Tunisia, and Iran.

During the tour, President Jiang met with leaders of these countries and exchanged views on the development of bilateral ties, which helped mutual understanding and cooperation, Kong Quan told a routine press briefing.

New areas of cooperation between China and the five countries had been explored during the visit, promoting relationships in depth.

Both sides had either improved existing mechanisms for cooperation or developed new ones through the signing of 23 governmental agreements, memoranda of cooperation, and trade accords, Kong said.

Moreover, the visit helped further promote China's cooperation with other developing nations in Africa and Asia, as four of the five nations were developing ones, Kong added.

He noted that President Jiang had clarified China's viewpoint on major international issues during the visit, such as counter- terrorism, the escalating Middle East crisis, and the situation in central Asia.
