Family Members of Air China Crash Victims to Return From South Korea
Chinese family members who lost their loved ones in an Air China plane crash in South Korea will return to China in recent days, Air China officials said Tuesday.
Chinese family members who lost their loved ones in an Air China plane crash in South Korea will return to China in recent days, Air China officials said Tuesday.
The 63 relatives of the 19 Chinese victims have gone through the bitter process of trying to identify the bodies and belongings of the dead.
Investigators have put up some 250 photographs showing deformed bodies in an effort to speed up the process. In cases where identification by photo is impossible, investigators are using DNA analysis.
Since the DNA genetic test takes about a month, families of some Chinese victims expressed their wish to go back instead of waiting for the results in a foreign country.
Officials of Air China said they will do everything to meet the demands of the bereaved families and will let the family members go to South Korea again when the DNA results come out.
During their short stay, the bereaved families visited the crash site to pray for their loved ones.
Another 21 Chinese whose family members had been injured in the disaster will also head for home together with members of the bereaved families.
The Air China jetliner was carrying 166 passengers and crew members when it crashed into a fog-shrouded mountain near the southern city of Pusan last Monday, killing at least 126 people. Two others are still missing.
There were 136 South Koreans, 18 Chinese, one Uzbek woman and 11 Chinese crew on board.
