Chinese State Councilor Wu Yi said Monday that China will, as always, strengthen its friendship and cooperation with Bulgaria in various fields on the basis of mutual respect and non-interference in each other's internal affairs despite their differences in ideology, social systems and values.

She made the remarks in Beijing on Monday afternoon in her talks with Nikolai Vassilev, Bulgaria's deputy prime minister and economic minister.

Wu noted that there are traditional cooperative relations and friendship between China and Bulgaria and their peoples, and bilateral friendly relations remain unchanged although great changes have taken place both internationally and their domestic arenas in the past 50 years and more.

Meanwhile, both sides have extensively cooperated on economic issues, trade, science and technology, added Wu.

Noting that Bulgaria is China's important trade partner in the Balkans, Wu said the two countries have a firm foundation and great potential for cooperation.

She also spoke positively of the sustained and rapid development of bilateral economic and trade relations.

Vassilev stressed that Bulgaria attaches importance to the development of its relations with China, and that China is on Bulgaria's priority list of important partners in this century.

He said that the big business delegation he is leading here demonstrates the importance his country attaches to its friendship and cooperation with China.

He also spoke highly of China's achievements in reform and its drive to open up markets.

Bulgaria, one of the first countries to recognize the new China, supported a one-China policy and China's entry into the World Trade Organization.

Wu voiced her appreciation and mentioned the good cooperation in international affairs between the two countries.

She said Vassilev's current visit to China will boost the development of bilateral relations.

Wu also briefed the visitors on China's domestic situation and its strategy for developing its western regions.

Both sides agreed to further bilateral business exchanges and cooperation.

Chinese statistics show that Sino-Bulgarian trade last year reached 118 million U.S. dollars, a year-on-year rise of 24.6 percent.
