Turkish Youth Requests Premier Zhu for Chinese Passport

"May I ask Premier Zhu to help me with a Chinese Passport?"

A Turkish youth raised such a question in the face of Premier Zhu, local time at noon, April 19, 2002 when Turkey business circles and friends were giving a luncheon reception for welcoming Premier Zhu's visit to Turkey in the Kempinski, a hotel featuring the charm of the ancient Ottoman Empire located on the western bank of the Bosporus Strait.

This roused a great fun among the people present at the luncheon party.

The youth also said: "I have ever been to China. The Chinese people are very friendly to the Turkish people. I enjoy Chinese dishes very much and I love China."

People are waiting curiously for Premier Zhu's answer to the question.

"Handling the matter impartially," Premier Zhu said, "You love China and hope to know about China. This is very good. Since you want to have Chinese dishes, you have first to practice using Chinese chopsticks and when you've acquired the knack of it you come to me talking over the "application for a Chinese passport."

Premier Zhu's humorous answer set up a laughter and applause in the hall.

In view of the bright prospect of exchanges and cooperation between Turkey and China a chairwoman of the Turkey Association of Education made a suggestion to the Premier: "I've learned that the Chinese students like to learn foreign languages in the USA and other places. Actually, Turkey has quite a few schools good at foreign language teaching. I would like you to pass on the information to the Chinese students."

No sooner said than Premier Zhu answered, "I'll do the 'advertisement' for you."

"Language is a tool people resort to for intercourse and exchanges. We want talents studying and speaking Turkish and we also welcome Turkish students to study Chinese in China so as to increase mutual understanding and feelings between the two peoples," continued Premier Zhu.

At the luncheon reception Premier Zhu also answered questions raised by Turkish businessmen about developing the commercial cooperation between the two countries. He said: "I'm satisfied with the trade development between the two countries since the establishment of the diplomatic relations. China will recently send an investment delegation composed of businessmen to Turkey for an on-the-spot study tour and accordingly we would also like Turkish businessmen to invest for development in China."

A Turkish boss engaging in trade raised a question about how to handle "anti-dumping" case in trade. To this, Premier Zhu gave a clear-cut answer: "China has now entered the World Trade Organization and so the trade dispute of the two parties can be transacted in accordance with the WTO mechanism for dispute solution."

To develop tourism industries between the two countries is one of the results gained in Premier Zhu's visit to Turkey this time. He said, "Starting from next month onwards Turkey will become one of the travel destination countries for Chinese citizens and, in the meantime, China is also a country rich in tourism resources. Therefore, we would like more Turkish people to make sightseeing tours in China's Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an, and Urumqi and other places. China will afford them a big welcome!"
