Yao Jie, the former Chinese player from the Netherlands, eliminated Danish All-England champion Camilla Martin in the semi-finals of the European Badminton Championships in Malmo, Sweden on Friday.

Yao came from behind to beat the top seed Martin 0-7, 2-7, 7-0, 7-3, 7-1.

Martin said: "The Dutch player went up a gear today, which I was not able to do," she said. "I started at a tough pace but I am always able to do that, though my opponent was able to stay with me and keep up with the pace.

"I thought I should have won after the first two games but I wasn't able to do that. I wasn't playing badly: it's just that sometimes you lose, and she deserved her victory."

In another semi-final, Mia Audina Tjiptawan of the Netherlands, the former Uber Cup heroine from Indonesia, beat five-time former Dutch champion Brenda Beenhakker 7-1, 8-6, 7-1.

The Netherlands however was soon celebrating the fact that it had made sure of its first ever European gold medal.

"It means a great deal to us," said Dutch manager Martijn van Dooremalen. "We have a gold, a silver and a bronze. This is unique - we are a small sport and this will help us to get more funding, especially from the national Olympic committee."

Peter Rasmussen ousted his second seeded Danish compatriot Anders Boesen 2-7, 7-5, 5-7, 7-4, 7-5 to advance to the men's final. Rammussen will clash with his compatriot top seed Kenneth Jonassen in the final after the latter defeating Sweden's Rasmus Wengberg 7-1, 8-7, 7-4 in another semi-final.
