Chinese Law Expert Elected to UN Court for Law of Sea

A Chinese law expert was elected to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea on Friday to fill the vacancy of a member whose term of office will expire on September 30.

A Chinese law expert was elected to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea on Friday to fill the vacancy of a member whose term of office will expire on September 30.

Xu Guangjian, director-general of the Department of Treaty and Law of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, was elected together with six others from Argentina, Bulgaria, France, Italy, Senegal and Trinidad and Tobago.

The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea is an independent judicial body established in October 1996 in Germany to adjudicate disputes arising from the interpretation and application of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

The tribunal is composed of 21 independent members, elected from among persons enjoying the highest reputation for fairness and integrity and of recognized competence in the field of the law of the sea.
