Chinese Ambassador to Egypt Liu Xiaoming has hailed the Sino-Egyptian strategic ties of cooperation as "a good example" for dialog and cooperation among civilizations.

"Such ties between the two countries show to the world that civilizations can learn from each other and seek common development," Liu told Xinhua ahead of a five-day official visit to Egypt by Chinese Prime Minister Zhu Rongji, who is due in Cairo Friday afternoon.

"China and Egypt, both ancient civilizations, should work together to make a new contribution to progress and development of the global civilization," the ambassador said.

He said that the two countries have a long history of friendly exchanges, pointing to the fact that Egypt is the first Arab and African country to recognize the People's Republic of China.

He said that China has considered Egypt the most important partner in the Arab world and the African continent.

Despite the changing international situation, Sino-Egyptian friendship has been consolidated and developed since the two countries established diplomatic ties 46 years ago, he said.

In addition, bilateral cooperation in political, economic, trade, military, scientific and technological, cultural and educational areas has been strengthened, he added.

"The development of Sino-Egyptian ties has maintained a good momentum," Liu said, adding that mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries in all areas has been deepened since Chinese President Jiang Zemin and his Egyptian counterpart Hosni Mubarak decided to establish bilateral strategic relations of cooperation in 1999.

The two countries have maintained multi-faceted consultation on political issues, Liu said, adding that they have shared similar views on many regional and international issues and engaged in fruitful cooperation in the international arena.

He said that China has long supported the just struggle of the Arab people, especially the Palestinian people, to regain their occupied territories and restore their legitimate national rights.

"China appreciates President Mubarak's unremitting efforts to realize peace in the Mideast region, while supporting his proposal on convening an international anti-terror conference and establishing a nuclear-free zone in the region," the Chinese ambassador said.

He said that Egypt adheres to the one-China policy and supports China's reunification, adding that the two countries have coordinated with and supported each other in maintaining regional and world peace as well as safeguarding and promoting rights and interests of developing countries.

"These constitute a solid political basis for Sino-Egyptian friendship and cooperation," he said.

Liu said that President Jiang and President Mubarak held phone talks over anti-terrorism and Mideast issues and reached consensus shortly after the September 11 event, thus further promoting bilateral cooperation on major issues.

"President Mubarak's successful visit to China in January this year has enriched Sino-Egyptian strategic ties of cooperation," Liu said, adding that Zhu's coming visit to Egypt will upgrade bilateral ties to a new high.

Regarding bilateral economic and trade ties, Liu said that such ties have been developing rapidly in recent years and trade volume between the two countries reached 953 million U.S. dollars last year, an increase of 5.1 percent over the previous year.

China's investment in Egypt has increased steadily, and Chinese enterprises have also taken part in some projects in the Suez Canal free trade zone, he added.

Moreover, bilateral cooperation in the high-tech field has shown signs of progress, he said, adding that cultural and educational exchanges have promoted mutual understanding between the peoples of the two countries.

"China plans to set up a cultural center in Egypt and offers assistance to programs on Chinese language learning," he said.

He said that China and Egypt, both influential developing countries, are facing the same task of promoting peace and seeking development.

"Developing Sino-Egyptian ties is in the basic interests of the peoples of the two countries, and will also benefit cooperation among developing countries and help maintain regional and world peace and stability," Liu said.
