Sino-Japan Venture to Build LCD Base in Shanghai
The project will cost 850 million U.S. dollars. The Nippon Electronics Corporation (NEC) will hold 25 percent of the stake, according to a letter of intent signed in Shanghai on Thursday between the Shanghai SVA and NEC.
A plant with an annual output of 500,000 new-style liquid crystal displayers (LCD) will be built in Shanghai this year, China's leading industrial center.
The project will cost 850 million U.S. dollars. The Nippon Electronics Corporation (NEC) will hold 25 percent of the stake, according to a letter of intent signed in Shanghai on Thursday between the Shanghai SVA and NEC.
The joint venture will build a production line for making the fifth generation thin film transistors (TFT) this year. Its annual sales income will top 1.2 billion U.S. dollars by 2005, said a Shanghai SVA official.
Koji Nishigaki, director of NEC, said the aim of his company's decision to build a new type TFT production line in China was to strengthen its competitiveness. The Shanghai SVA and NEC complemented each other in TFT development.
