The British government has announced to grant visa-free access to holders of Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) passports for their UK visits of up to six months, according to the British Consulate-General in Hong Kong Wednesday.

The measure, which is designed to improve access for visitors to the UK from Macao, came into effect on April 17, 2002.

In addition, holders of Macao SAR passport are no longer be required, from April 17, 2002, to obtain a Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV) for journeys that involve transit in the UK.

HK and Macao passport holders both benefit

UK ministers agreed to the change in visa requirements for Macao SAR passport holders in a Statement of Changes to the Immigration Rules, which was laid before Parliament on March 27 for the statutory 21 days for any objections to be raised.

With no objections, the Statement of Changes to the Immigration Rules came into law.

Hong Kong SAR passport holders already benefit from visa-free access to the UK, which, until now, was given as a concession outside the UK Immigration Rules.

In order to regularize this position, Hong Kong SAR passport holders have now been included in the Statement of Changes to the Immigration Rules.
