China's Defense Minister Chi Haotian said in Beijing on Wednesday that China appreciated the " one-China" stance of the Philippines.

Also vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission and a state councilor, Chi said during talks with Angelo T. Reyes, Philippines' secretary of defense that it would benefit both sides if the mainland and Taiwan were reunited, and the trend to reunification could not be stopped by force.

"We hope that the Philippine side fully recognizes the political sensitivity and complexity of the Taiwan issue, and keeps on high alert over the separatist attempt of the Taiwan authorities," Chi said.

Reyes said the Philippines hoped to develop all-round, deep and sustainable friendly relations with China, and that the Philippine military hoped to strengthen exchanges with the Chinese army.

He said on behalf of President Gloria Arroyo that the Philippines would strictly abide by the "one-China" policy, and firmly believed that China would play an important role in maintaining regional stability and prosperity.

Chi also briefed his Philippines guest on China's foreign policy, national defense and military construction.
