The European Union (EU) and Russia on Tuesday stressed that United Nations' resolutions on the Middle East issue should serve as the basis for any solution to the crisis in that region.

At a joint press conference, Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Pique and his Russian counterpart, Igor Ivanov, said the EU and Russia agreed that U.N. resolutions should be implemented fully and effectively to settle the Middle East conflict.

Stressing the important role of the international community in resolving the Middle East issue, Pique said an international political basis had formed for establishing peace in the Middle East. It was now time to carry out relevant resolutions and agreements.

Pique said both the EU and Russia saw the recent Israeli withdrawal from parts of newly occupied Palestinian territories as a step to go in the correct direction toward a political settlement of the Middle East crisis. But partial pullout was far from enough.

Ivanov expressed Russia's support for the mediating efforts by United States Secretary of State Colin Powell. Russia hoped that the Israelis and Palestinians could seize this opportunity and make joint efforts to prevent further deterioration of the situation, putting the Middle East peace process back on course.

The two ministers also voiced deep concern about the worsening humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian territories recently occupied by Israeli forces.
