China, EU Hold Forum on Information Society

China and the European Union (EU) opened the 2002 China-Euro Cooperation Forum on the Information Society in Beijing on Tuesday, in an effort to forge closer links in information technology.

China and the European Union (EU) opened the 2002 China-Euro Cooperation Forum on the Information Society in Beijing on Tuesday, in an effort to forge closer links in information technology.

At the opening ceremony on Tuesday morning, Chinese Minister of Science and Technology Xu Guanhua said that the Chinese governmentfully realized the strategic significance of developing information technology.

Xu said that his ministry had made progress in information technology a priority in order to stimulate China's economy overall.

He also said China and the EU had cultivated good cooperation in the field. After the two sides signed an agreement on science and technology cooperation, Chinese scientists participated in the Framework Program of EU research and development.

Under the cooperative mechanism, Xu added, China was willing toexpand bilateral cooperation on the information society with the EU.

More than 1,100 participants from both China and Europe are attending the five-day forum, which includes two conferences and 36 parallel meetings on e-governance, information securities, software, e-commerce, multimedia content and tools, applications for citizens in the information society, broad-band access, micro-electronics and optic-electronics, mobile communication, remote sensing satellites and the e-Olympics.

After the opening ceremony, Minister Xu and EU Commissioner Erkki Liikanen signed a joint statement on cooperation on the information society.

According to the statement, China pledges to open its high technology research and development plan, known as the 863 Project,which was approved in March 1986, to EU members as a reciprocal gesture.

Meanwhile, both sides will encourage their researchers to join cooperative scientific research.

They also support joint research in areas of common interest, such as the third generation of mobile telecommunication technologies and open source software.
