The full text of the Statute on Handling Medical Accidents was published Sunday (April 14) by Xinhua News Agency in accordance with a decree from the State Council, China's highest governing body.

Containing 63 articles in seven chapters, the statute covers various issues concerning medical accidents, such as their prevention and handling, technical appraisement, administrative supervision and compensation.

The statute will come into effect on September 1 this year when an old Method on Handling Medical Accidents issued by the State Council in 1987 will be revoked.

An official from the State Council said the method has become outdated because it cannot meet the needs of the current situation.

Protecting the rights of patients and hospitals has become a hot issue in recent years as the number of disputes over medical accidents has increased.
