A spokesman for the Office of the Commissioner of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hong Kong Saturday denounced the U.S. State Department's report onHong Kong as "irresponsible".
The spokesman said that for almost five years since Hong Kong'sreturn to the motherland, with the strong support of the Central People's Government and the joint efforts made by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government headed by Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa and the people of Hong Kong, the principleof "one country, two systems" and the Basic Law have been fully implemented.
"This is a fact widely acknowledged by the international community," he stressed. "However, the U.S. State Department' report made irresponsible remarks on some of Hong Kong's current political and economic issues and economic and trade co-operation between Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland," he said.
"We express our resolute opposition to this. It must be pointedout clearly that the HKSAR's affairs are the internal matters of China, and no foreign country has the right to interfere by whatever means," the spokesman said.
