The United States is planning to sell a new long-range radar to Jordan to help the country improve its defense ability, the Pentagon said on Friday.
The AN/FPS-117 long-range radar, with a value of 22 million dollars, would be sold by Lockheed Martin's naval electronics and surveillance systems in Syracuse, New York State.
The radar would enable the Royal Jordanian Air Force to protectkey military and economic sites, including airfields, runways and petroleum refineries, during the early part of an invasion until allies arrive with reinforcements, a Pentagon statement said.
"Jordan shares its easternmost border with Iraq and provides a critical buffer between potential adversaries and U.S. allies," the statement said. "This proposed sale will further strengthen Jordan as a coalition partner."
