An exhibition highlighting the high-sounding concept of sustainable development was on stage Friday at Pacific Place, a shopping center in Central on the Hong Kong Island.

"By mounting this exhibition, we hope to introduce to a large cross-section of the public what is behind the rather new or even high-sounding concept of sustainable development," Director of Administration Andrew Wong said at the opening ceremony for "Building a Sustainable City" roving exhibition.

He said the exhibition will also be held in Hong Kong's other major shopping malls in the coming weeks.

Sustainable development aims to achieve three main goals, including a better quality of life for ourselves as well as a more pleasant environment, provision of a better quality of life for our future generations and maintenance of a balance between economic development, protection of the natural environment and a fair and progressive society, he noted.

"We can only achieve these goals if we all take part in making Hong Kong sustainable," Wong said. Visitors are encouraged to think about how they can also contribute to building a sustainable

city," he added.
