Chinese Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation Minister Shi Guangsheng and German Economic Minister Werner Mueller on Thursday (April 11) spoke positively of the development of bilateral economic and trade relations.

During their talks in Berlin, both sides exchanged views on issues related to Sino-European as well as Sino-German economic and trade cooperation.

Shi is currently accompanying Chinese President Jiang Zemin on his state visit to Germany.

Both Shi and Mueller agreed that the current Sino-German economic and trade relations are in very good shape, with no major problems between the two sides.

On the EU prohibition of imports of animal origin from China, Shi said the investigation report unilaterally issued by the EU is neither scientific nor impartial, and that China could not accept the investigation result imposed by the EU.

He pointed out that the practice, in which the EU prohibits all imports of animal origin with the excuse of such product's being contaminated but at the same time does not restrict those with similar problems from other countries, is a kind of discrimination against China.

China calls for establishing a Sino-German joint investigation on the matter and will accept its findings, Shi said.

If the EU side discovers off-shore imports which are not compatible with its norms, it should return the controversial products to the Chinese side instead of destroying them, he said.

Shi expressed the hope that Germany could play a more active role in helping settle the China-EU dispute, while Mueller said that he understood the Chinese position.

Shi also noted that the EU had taken provisional safeguard measures after the United States imposed section 201 of the safeguard measures on imports of foreign steel products.

China appreciates the EU's regarding China as a developing country and excluding most Chinese steel products from its safeguard measures, Shi said.
