Somalia Opens First Teacher Training Institute Since Civil War

The institute, the first of its kind since the beginning of thecivil war some 12 years ago, is called Banadir Teacher Training Institute and it is jointly funded by the Hollandaise aid agency (NOVIB), and a local education umbrella called Formal Private Education Network (FPENS) in Somalia.

A Teacher Training Institute was officially opened on Tuesday in Mogadishu, capital of Somalia.

The institute, the first of its kind since the beginning of thecivil war some 12 years ago, is called Banadir Teacher Training Institute and it is jointly funded by the Hollandaise aid agency (NOVIB), and a local education umbrella called Formal Private Education Network (FPENS) in Somalia.

In a colorful ceremony held in the new institute's center, Somalia Education Minister Hassan Mohamed Osman Jumbur has cut offthe white ribbon for opening the institute while officials from the various walks of life in Mogadishu and the students of the newinstitute have watched the opening ceremony.

Jumbur said on the occasion that his government places the education the second priority.

"The education comes immediately after the security," said the education minister.

The first 120 students, who are all women, have started their teacher training courses on Tuesday.

The women, all covered properly according to the Islam, looked as young as between 25 and 35.

Ahmed Abdullahi Sheikh Mohamed, the chairman for the FPENS education umbrella, said the 120 women will under serious trainingprogram which will last for two years.

"During this period," he said, "The women teachers will be equipped with all techniques and relevant educational background they may need for their future teaching activities."

According to Abdullahi, the new women-teachers will be coming to the center everyday for their classes and the courses will be taught in English language.

"The Hollandaise aid agency, NOVIB, will pay more than 50 percent of the entire expenses for the teacher training institute,while the FPENS will also have to cover the rest," he said.
