Young Farmers Urged to Contribute to Rural Economy

Vice-Premier Wen Jiabao urged young farmers across China to arm themselves with the latest technologies and practical skills in an effort to contribute to rural reforms and economic development.

Vice-Premier Wen Jiabao urged young farmers across China to arm themselves with the latest technologies and practical skills in an effort to contribute to rural reforms and economic development.

Shoulder long-term task
Young farmers shoulder the long-term task of restructuring agricultural production, boosting the rural economy and increasing farmers' incomes, Wen told a national conference on the country's rural youth work Tuesday (April 9).

Acquire new skills and state-of-the-art technologies
"The younger generation of Chinese farmers should acquire new skills and state-of-the-art technologies to increase agricultural production, and gear their production to the needs of the market,"he said.

Carry forward glorious traditions
The vice-premier also encouraged young farmers to carry forward the glorious traditions of the Chinese nation and help build a sound cultural and ethical environment in rural areas.

Branches of the Communist Youth League of China should play a leading role in the countryside to help young farmers improve production and quality of living, enrich their cultural lives and maintain their legitimate rights, Wen stressed.

The meeting, sponsored by the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League and the Ministry of Agriculture, also commended some young farmers for their outstanding contribution tothe country's social and economic development over the past year.

  • Developing the agricultural productive forces and raising farmers' purchasing power are an important aspect of the effort to stimulate domestic demand, and have a bearing on overall national economic development and social stability.

    The following must be done to increase farmers' incomes considerably as fast as possible.

    First, returning more farmland to forests.

    Second, deepening the reform of rural taxes and administrative charges and the reform of the grain and cotton distribution systems.

    Third, making efforts to increase sources of income for farmers.

    Fourth, supporting agriculture more effectively.
