Delegates attending the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Ministerial Conference on Cooperation of Migratory Flows between Europe and Asia reached broad consensus and pledged further cooperation on migration management.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue said the conference -- jointly proposed by Spain, China and Germany at the third ASEM in Seoul in 2000 -- had just concluded in Lanzarote, Spain, with officials in charge of migration or diplomatic issues of the 26 ASEM members present.
She said the meeting mainly discussed issues about migratory flows between Europe and Asia, cracking down on illegal migration, and promoting orderly flows of lawful migration.
The meeting reached broad consensus and issued a declaration which stressed that the pivotal factor in eradicating illegal migration was the alleviation of poverty and solution of the development problem, Zhang said.
She added that delegates also decided to establish a mechanism of liaison officials for migration, and enhance cooperation in information exchanges, education, technical assistance, personnel training, and detecting the forgery of documents.
