Chinese Vice-Premier Wen Jiabao said Monday afternoon that both China and the U.S. should fully understand and trust each other and solve trade problems through negotiations.

He told visiting U.S. trade representative Robert Zoellick that economic and trade relations were an important component of Sino-U.S. relations.

Wen said that China and the U.S. had further expanded cooperation in trade, which benefited both, and in the process of developing cooperation, problems and friction existed inevitably.

Sino-U.S. relations had made great progress since the Asia- Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting last year, and the two countries were committed to constructive and cooperative relations, he said.

He stressed that as long as the two nations observed three Sino- U.S. joint communiques, the bilateral relations would progress in a healthy and stable way.

Zoellick said that the U.S. and China had a lot in common although they had the histories and social systems of their own. Proper relations between the two countries benefited the people and was conducive to regional and world peace and prosperity.

He noted that the U.S. attached importance to developing relations with China, and he said his visit would improve economic and trade cooperation between the U.S. and China.
