Chairman of China's National People's Congress Standing Committee Li Peng on Sunday visited Miyazaki Prefecture on the third leg of his week-long trip to Japan.

Chinese and Japanese economies compatible with each other
In a reception hosted by Miyazaki Governor Suketaka Matsukata in his honor, Li said that he was impressed by the hospitality shown by local people.

As the first Chinese leader ever to visit Miyazaki, Li said he had deepened his understanding of Japan through his current and previous Japan tours.

"As two major nations in East Asia, China and Japan shared a 2, 000-year-long history of cultural exchanges. Moreover, the Chinese and Japanese economies are also compatible with each other," he told local dignitaries present at the reception.

"The friendly coexistence of China and Japan is not only conducive to our two countries but also has direct connection to the peace and stability in Asia and the world at large," he added.

He also hoped more people from Miyazaki to visit China for tourist and business purposes, adding that such visits can also enhance the friendly feelings between the Chinese and Japanese peoples.

Miyazaki ready to further economic and cultural links with China
Matsukata, in reply, said that Miyazaki is ready to take a series of measures to further the economic and cultural links with China. As one step, Miyazaki has opened an office in Shanghai, he said.

He also briefed Li on more detailed plans for carrying out cooperation with China.

Li and his entourage on Sunday also visited Fujitsu Hitachi Plasma Display Co. Ltd., now the world's largest plasma display manufacturer. Li inquired details of production, packaging and testing of the state-of-the-art plasma display devices made by the factory. The factory, with a total staff of 520, now can produce 40,000 displays per month.

To welcome Li Peng, the local government also staged a cultural performance in a renowned theater. Local artists and children sang Chinese and Japanese songs for the Chinese guests.

Li is scheduled to leave Miyazaki for Kagoshima Prefecture, the final stop of his Japan tour.
